American households toss nearly 150,000 tons of food every day. That’s a whole lot of brown avocados, wilted greens, and uneaten leftovers. One of the ways that I combat food waste is by storing my food properly—which helps to extend the life of my food.
Not only does this save me money (I think we can all agree that tossing uneaten fruits and veggies is heartbreaking and a waste of money 😩), but it also helps divert landfill waste and reduce global methane emissions.
These are some of my favorite tools for storing my produce and leftovers…
1. Stainless Steel Containers
These store food right and tight. I store most of my leftovers in these, as well as my greens. I love stainless steel because of its high quality and durability—which means these last forever. They’re also lightweight, which makes them perfect for eating on the go.
2. Reusable Silicone Bags
So long, single use ziplock bags! These are airtight, resealable, endlessly reusable, plastic free, and food grade silicone storage bag. You can toss them into the dishwasher, microwave, into boiling water, the freezer, and oven safe up to 400F! There’s really nothing these bags cannot do. Plus (yes, there’s more), you can send your bags back to Stasher where they will convert them to playground pebbles via their Stasher repurposing program.
3. Reusable Food Wrap
Gone are the days of using plastic saran wrap—which cannot be recycled. These food wraps are made with natural, biodegradable materials, and can be washed and reused for a year or longer!
4. Reusable Produce Bags
I bring these with me to the grocery or farmer’s market to avoid using plastic produce bags, but they’re also great for keeping fruits and veggies organized in your fridge!
