I have been making my own lotion for over three years. I’d melt down the ingredients, put them in a a jar and call it a day. But then… I whipped… and my mind was blown. It took a regular hard moisturizer and turned it into a fluffy amazing mound of goodness. You have to try it. Your skin will feel amazing, you can feel good because you are using only natural organic ingredients to moisturize as opposed to toxic chemicals, it is package free, and it smells SO DAMN GOOD! Check out this video to learn how to make it!
This lotion will last for months (but it won’t, because you will use it up before then). Also, just combine equal parts of the ingredients, in this video I used 1/4 cup of each, but you can use more or less depending on how much you need.

Is it possible to share with us the exact quantity of each ingredient you put into your body butter? Thanks!
Hi Julie! For this I used 1/4 cup of each ingredient (except essential oil), but it is up to you depending how much of lotion you want to make.
Hi Lauren ,
I'm living in Belgium, so is it possible to put the name of ingredient on your blog, I have to found them in french so it's easier for me if I have the real name or the recipe in english.
Thank u for your help.
Sandra
Definetely I'm gonna try this! But I was wondering, how long can you keep it?
I am happy you like it! Another wonderful thing about this lotion is that you can keep it for months!!!!
Hey Lauren first of all you are like a super duper inspiration to me, and I would like to know if you keep this lotion in the fridge or at normal temperature. Thanks !
Where do you get your oils in bulk?
Tess, here in NYC I love going to Integral Yoga. They have so many things you can buy in bulk there, it is amazing!
But what temp do you store it at? I would assume it kind of melts in the heat and definitely gets harder when cold? Or does the whipping prevent that? I was expecting there to be beeswax in the recipe to help stabilize it.
I'm wondering the same as well. Kind of like a lot of deodorant recipes I've made and tried over the years. They all looked great when stored but didn't hold up when pulled out of the fridge.
Hi Hannah, I keep it in my bathroom and it doesn't melt so room temperature is fine.
I would like to know this as well, I live in the desert so it is really warm here in the summer. Do the ingredients remain combined ?
I am going to have to give this recipe a try. I am always buying store bought lotions and creams and never really like them. I am getting into making more of my own things to be more frugal and this is just another to add to my list. Thanks for this recipe!
Awesome. Thank you for sharing. Sometimes I use just Sheabutter, but thats too rich, so I would love to try your bodybutter!
Could you please write the ingredients? As I'm Spanish and I don't understand what did you said.
Many thanks. 😉
Equal amounts (she uses ¼ C or ~60ml each) of Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, and Sweet Almond Oil.
Thank you!
Another great video! Can't wait to whip up a batch once I'm done with the lotions I have. I hope you make deodorant next 😉
Love this, but next time could you show the product in use? That way we could see just how well the lotion applies versus trusting it's great, what with all the many DIY recipes out there? Would love that!
Do you use unrefined Shea butter?
My mom and I want to make this, but we were wondering, can you get Shea Butter at traditional stores like WalMart?
If you can't find locally, look online @ Amazon, Mountain Rose Herbs, etc.
I just found your blog and I absolutely LOVE you! I find your lifestyle very inspiring and I salute you! To live a life like yours would be impossible for me, but you still inspire me and this body butter went on my to do-list immediately!
Too bad I live in this teeny tiny country where I can't buy the ingredients in bulk..
I just made this a few days ago, and I love it! It smells great, and feels great on my skin. I keep it in my bathroom and it's in the 70's here (Fahrenheit) and the body butter has stayed whipped and combined perfectly. I love how it melts on the skin. Thanks for this simple recipe. There are many body butter recipes out there that have so many ingredients but this one, I already have the recipe memorized.
Hey you are so great!!!
Nice blog.
Does a video for shampoo follow?
Greetings from Germany
Katrin
H Lauren,
I love your whipped body butter
Can you use your body butter as a daily face cream?
Second that. Sounds great but maybe a bit heavy for the face?
An ayurvadic friend once told me not to put oils on my body that I wouldn't put in my body. For some reason, that made me a little more conscious of the lotions I used but I didn't really have an alternative. When I saw your recipe, I was super excited to try it. Unfortunately, it gave me a bad rash and my eczema returned. Perhaps my body is too accustomed to conventional moisturizers. So bummed that this didn't work out for me.
The other possibility is you were allergic to one of the oils. That's what happens if I'm allergic to something I put on my skin.
Awesome recipe! Can't wait to try it!
Thank you so much for this recipe! I love your blog.
Hi!
I need to ask if you had a cream recipe to other skin types (conbination/oily), and how to make a good natural shampoo.
Thanks!
Valeria
Rancagua, Chile.
My mother has been making us use this combination for years. We are african this is not new for us but great video
Coconut oil and cocoa butter are very comedogenic. Almond oil isn't that bad but shea butter is the only ingredient that isn't comedogenic. Comedogenic means that it will clog pores and cause breakout, so if you're acne prone you might not want to use this.
Love your blog by the way!
Just subscribed to your YouTube channel. You have some amazing ideas. I've been trying to simplify my life for ages, and even though I've been pretty good at getting rid of a lot of things I didn't need and not buying more, you still have some other tips I'm going to use. Thanks 🙂
Is this a body butter or a body lotion?
Can I use almond butter instead of almond oil??
Also, how do you make deodorant?
Thanks and best wishes from Europe 🙂
Hi Lauren, first of all I have to say you're really inspiring!! I'm a student of environmental engineering and I'm always thinking what I can make to help the planet and ourselves, and you give the perfect example! congrats 🙂
I'd like to know what you use to wash your hair, it's something you made by yourself?
I made this and it was easy enough but when I went to put it on, it was a little grainy which surprised me. I melted everything in a water bath….. but what caused the graininess… and does it always feel very oily when you apply it? It did feel good after a while.. sank right into my dry skin – but was too oily to do anything else until it sank in fully.
I got the same problem, my body butter stays liquid no matter how long I mix it. What am I doing wrong ? :/
You have to set it in the fridge before you whip
Hi! Thanks a lot for your idea and sharing it with world. I have noticed that coconut oil makes my skin dry and if I leave it overnight on my hair it smells not so good and brings a dirty feeling. I hope that your recipies are so well made, that the negative effects are balanced with the variety of ingredients.
Thst is a fantastic tutorial.

Hi Lauren ,
I'm living in Argentina and my english is very bad, so is it possible to PUT THE NAME of ingredient on your blog, I have to type them in english them translater to spanish!

Is Whole Foods a good place to buy the ingredients? I live in Philadelphia and I want to make sure I get organic ingredients without creating waste.
Hey Lauren, I went to Integral today and while they had a great selection, I didn't see any beauty products like the ingredients here in bulk. Have you been there recently? Did I miss something?
They did have olive oil, soap, and all purpose cleaner in bulk which was super cool.
Hi,Lauren
Thank you for sharing this receipt;) I hv only sweet almond oil and Shea butter now in my home. So I would like to know if it's possible to make this lotion with only equal parts of sweet almond oil and Shea butter? Thx for reading this comment! Hv a good day:)
Charlene
